It has been illegal for many years now for any contractor to list in any advertising on a website, business cards, paperwork, trucks, cars, shirts the word "Bonded". It cannot be used, period! Contractors know this and yet still do it to try to get a one-up on the competition. All licensed contractors must be license bonded according to the CSLB or they don't get to operate at all. That is why it is illegal to state "Bonded", because we all have to have it anyway, as a requirement to be licensed.
It is illegal to state "Insured" without listing what kind of insurance it is, like auto insured or General Liability insured.
It is illegal to state "Licensed" without stating what kind of license it is or without listing the CSLB license number. Believe it or not, some contractors fake you out by only having a business license number, not a contractor's license.
It is illegal to have a name and phone number advertising without a contractor's license number listed also.
It is illegal for any unlicensed contractor to do a job for over $1000 including materials and labor. This is a Felony offence. Additionally, if they advertise at all, they must state "unlicensed contractor", even on a business card.
It is illegal to use any other contractor's license number without the proper CSLB filings and designation of RME.
Beware of anyone doing any of these things above. They are guilty of misdemeanors and can be arrested for it.
To check a license, go to the CSLB.ca.gov website.
